Education in an Age of Extremism: the challenges for policy, professionalism and practice
Western societies are at the dawn of an age of extremism. There are increasing examples of extremist attacks in cities across Europe and these have given rise to a plethora of policy responses, including education policies. Drawing on research undertaken over the last five years, Hazel will map education policy responses to radicalization and extremism, highlighting differing government approaches. She will then provide examples of varying teacher responses to radicalization and extremism from a classroom perspective asking what teachers are doing to address these issues. Finally, Hazel will consider how teachers are positioned by governments as key players in this area, arguing that there are serious implications for the role of the teacher in new times.
